Beyond the Vet Clinic is committed to working collaboratively with referring practices. Clinical records are reviewed prior to the initial appointment, and following each assessment or treatment session an update report is provided to the referring veterinary surgeon to ensure continuity of care and clear communication throughout the patient's treatment journey.

Working together to support quality of life

Beyond the Vet Clinic provides veterinary-led home assessments, acupuncture, and therapeutic laser therapy for patients living with chronic pain, mobility challenges, age-related changes, and cognitive decline.

The service is designed to complement, not replace, the care provided by the primary veterinary surgeon. By working collaboratively with referring practices, we aim to provide additional support for patients who may benefit from a more detailed assessment of comfort, mobility, function, and quality of life within their home environment.

Why refer?

Chronic pain, osteoarthritis, mobility concerns, and cognitive decline can be challenging conditions to manage. While many patients respond well to conventional treatment, some continue to experience discomfort, reduced mobility, behavioural changes, or declining quality of life despite appropriate medical management.

A home visit often provides valuable insights that may not be readily apparent within the clinic environment. This may include:

• Assessment of mobility within the pet's normal home environment
• Evaluation of flooring, stairs, bedding, access to food and water, and other daily challenges
• Identification of subtle indicators of pain, discomfort, or functional decline
• Quality-of-life assessments for senior and geriatric patients
• Assessment of age-related cognitive changes
• Evaluation of treatment response in patients receiving long-term pain medication
• Identification of practical environmental modifications that may improve comfort and mobility
• Additional support for owners managing complex long-term conditions

When might a referral be helpful?

Referrals may be appropriate for patients with:

• Osteoarthritis and chronic pain
• Reduced mobility or stiffness
• Age-related musculoskeletal decline
• Neurological conditions affecting comfort or mobility
• Recovery from orthopaedic or soft tissue injury
• Patients requiring additional multimodal pain management
• Senior and geriatric wellness assessments
• Suspected cognitive decline or behavioural changes associated with ageing
• Patients where quality-of-life monitoring would be beneficial
• Cases where owners would benefit from additional support and education at home

Acupuncture and therapeutic laser therapy

Acupuncture and therapeutic laser therapy may be incorporated into a wider multimodal treatment plan where appropriate. These therapies are intended to support, rather than replace, conventional veterinary medicine.

Potential goals may include:

• Supporting patient comfort
• Improving mobility and function
• Reducing pain and inflammation
• Supporting recovery and rehabilitation
• Enhancing quality of life in chronic and geriatric cases
• Providing additional options for patients where treatment goals have not yet been fully achieved

Communication and continuity of care

All patients are seen by referral from their primary veterinary surgeon. Prior to the initial appointment, relevant clinical records are reviewed to ensure treatment is appropriate and aligned with the patient's existing care plan.

Following every assessment and treatment session, a written report is provided to the referring practice outlining:

• Assessment findings
• Mobility observations
• Quality-of-life considerations
• Treatments performed
• Patient response to treatment
• Recommendations for ongoing management
• Proposed follow-up plans

Medication reviews and pain management support

Many patients referred to Beyond the Vet Clinic are already receiving medication for chronic pain, osteoarthritis, cognitive changes, or other age-related conditions.

As part of the assessment process, current medications, treatment response, quality of life, mobility, and owner observations are reviewed. This can help identify opportunities to optimise a patient's overall pain management strategy and ensure that treatment goals remain appropriate as the patient's needs change over time. Where appropriate, recommendations may be made regarding multimodal pain management and environmental modifications.
